Types of Girls about the Globe – Arty & Museum GatG, City GatG, Shopping GatG
Solo travel in Zurich is a fab choice if you’re a woman travelling alone. This lakeside city in Switzerland is safe, clean and so easy to get around. I’ve visited twice and stayed for a week in total. In this guide I share where to eat, drink, sleep and sightsee, plus where to meet others in this vibrant Swiss city. Just remember Zurich isn’t cheap, so plan your budget before you go. Happy planning!
Tip – Zurich is expensive so I recommend purchasing a Zurich Card before you go. A 24-hour card is CHF 29 and a 72-hour card is CHF 56. It includes free public transport (including the train from the airport), free entry to the most popular museums, mini lake and river cruises, and 50% off the Old Town walking tour. Or if you’re planning on seeing more than Zurich and exploring the rest of Switzerland, have a look at the Swiss Pass instead. The Swiss Pass includes unlimited travel in Switzerland including the Glacier Express! * Buy the Swiss travel pass here

Stay for – For Zurich solo travel you’ll need at least 3 nights. Zurich is an also a good base to explore the rest of Switzerland.
Is Zurich safe for solo female travellers? Regarding safety in Zurich, Zurich is a really safe city but just be careful of pickpockets. You may find tourist touts at the main station so be firm if you don’t want to interact with them.
Is Zurich safe at night? Anywhere there are crowds keep an eye on your bag and purse, especially in Langstrasse, the Red Light District and near the train station and lakefront at night. I’ve given Zurich 4 out of 5 stars for being solo female-friendly. It’s generally safe, has a lot to see and has good transport links.
Did you know? Zurich is regularly ranked one of the most expensive cities in the world, so a Zurich Card really can save you money.
Solo Tip – “I stayed in Zurich for a week and loved it. I brought a Zurich pass that includes buses and admission to a lot of museums. It even gave discounts on some restaurants too.” – Bre, solo female traveller.

Getting Around Zurich
Switzerland is known for its efficient transport system but with Zurich not being that big, it is easy to walk around and navigate on foot.
Trams – Trams run all day, starting in the early hours (from 5am until 12:30am) and cover more of the city than the trains. If you are planning to do more than one return trip, purchase a day pass instead from one of the tram stops.

Or if you’re planning on seeing more than Zurich and exploring the rest of Switzerland, have a look at the Swiss Pass instead. The Swiss Pass includes unlimited travel in Switzerland including the Glacier Express! * Buy the Swiss travel pass here
Solo tip – “From Zurich, it is easy to get to the Bernese Oberland/Jungfrau area. Here you can visit many small villages and ski areas, all in the middle of incredible mountains.” – Christy, solo female traveller.

From Zurich Airport
The best way to get from Zurich Airport to the city is by train. Trains leave every few minutes from the station under the airport shopping centre and take around 10 to 15 minutes to Zurich HB. Buy your ticket on the SBB app or at the machines (it’s included in the Zurich Card). Taxis cost around CHF 50 to 80 and wait outside Arrivals.
* Feel more confident with someone waiting for you at the airport with Hoppa, a reliable and safe service for solo females.
Travelling Onwards
The train system in Switzerland is fantastic. Zurich is one of the biggest hubs with trains to the rest of Switzerland as well as its European neighbours. Head to Hauptbahnhof in the city centre where the trains and trams interconnect. Buy your ticket for your onward journey out of Zurich at one of the self-service machines.
TIP – If you are planning on seeing more of Switzerland, consider a Swiss Pass from 3 days to 15 days. As well as access to rail, bus, boat and some trams, it also includes 50% on most cable cars and entrance into hundreds of museums.
Switzerland Travel Insurance
Zurich is a great city to explore but travel insurance is always recommended to cover you for any travel delays, medical assistance and activities that you may want to do.
True Traveller and SafetyWing are the two insurance companies that I recommend. True Traveller is available to UK and European residents, and SafetyWing covers travellers of all nationalities, including digital nomads. Girl about the Globe app members also get a SafetyWing discount.
Both allow you to buy insurance when you are already on the road and offer different plans depending on your needs. * Check insurance cover and prices for True Traveller or SafetyWing
How To Be a Solo Female Traveller Who Cares in Zurich
One of my favourite ways to travel is knowing that where I spend my time and money makes a difference. Here are two ways to do that in Zurich.
Social Impact Projects in Zurich
OFF Ort für Frauen – A safe, welcoming meeting place in Zurich for refugee and migrant women and their children. It offers everyday support, community and a place to belong. If you’d like to give back while you’re in the city, get in touch to see how you can donate or help.
Züri rollt – Your free city bike makes a difference too. Züri rollt is run by AOZ, Zurich’s asylum organisation, and gives refugees and job seekers valuable work experience. So pedalling around the lake really is a ride with purpose.
Want more ways to travel with purpose? Read my 10 ways to be a conscious traveller and see more social impact projects around the world.
Issues Affecting Girls in Switzerland
Even in one of the safest and wealthiest countries in the world, girls and women face real challenges. In a survey of 4,495 women and girls aged 16 and over commissioned by Amnesty International, around one in five said they had experienced sexual violence, and only 8% had reported it to the police (source).
That’s why 10% of Girl about the Globe’s profits go to the Girl about the Globe Foundation, bringing hope to vulnerable girls. Find out how your bookings help vulnerable girls.
